Discover more about Avignon
Practical and interesting facts about the destination.
Avignon combines materially different experience families within and around the city: UNESCO medieval heritage, museums and art collections, religious architecture, markets and food culture, river landscapes, cycling, wine areas and nearby Provençal villages and regional landscapes.
Calm is spatially available but not uniform. The central historic core contains pedestrian streets and quiet squares, yet the main monument circuit, market areas, terraces and event streets can be socially active.
Avignon has visible public social life through cafés, terraces, markets, pedestrian squares, food halls, festivals, cultural venues, riverfront places and shared walking or cycling activities.
Avignon has identifiable low-cost components: walking through the historic centre and along the ramparts, free access to the five municipal museums in ordinary collections, public markets, self-guided walks and the free river shuttle to Barthelasse Island.
Avignon’s walled historic centre is compact and described by the tourism office as easy to visit on foot or by bicycle; the Palais des Papes is about a ten-minute walk from the tourist office.
Crowd pressure is spatially concentrated rather than uniformly distributed: the Palais des Papes, Pont d’Avignon, Place du Palais, Rue des Teinturiers and central market areas are the most visitor-oriented zones, while Barthelasse Island, Rhône towpaths, outer ramparts, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and rural cycling routes provide alternative settings.
Avignon supports premium spending through historic five-star hotels, boutique properties, gastronomic restaurants, wine experiences, private or guided heritage visits, river dining and regional excursions.
Avignon has lively public spaces, pedestrian streets, cafés, terraces, markets, evening venues and a substantial performing-arts infrastructure.
